Who is the MerPeople Retreat suitable for?
To join the MerPeople Retreat Maldives, participants should already have mermaiding experience and be confident swimming in open water. You don’t need an official mermaid certification, but you must be able to swim safely in a tail without assistance.
Good swimming skills and a basic level of fitness are important, as mermaiding can be physically demanding. Prior experience in snorkelling or freediving is highly recommended to help you feel relaxed underwater and improve your posing and breath control.
Scuba diving certification is not required, but it’s a wonderful addition if you plan to join the optional diving excursions. The underwater world of the Maldives is truly breathtaking and worth exploring.
During deep-water sessions, our safety guards will always be present with flotation devices and a support boat nearby. However, please remember that swimming and posing in a tail can be tiring, and listening to your body is essential.
We are looking for team players who value kindness, connection, and collaboration. This retreat is a space for fun, creativity, and shared joy. We strive to keep it drama-free and free from competition or negativity — just pure support, laughter, and love on equal grounds.
People of all shapes, sizes, ages, and genders are welcome. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian.
This experience is for ocean souls who want to grow, connect, and create unforgettable underwater memories in a safe, inspiring, and heart-centered environment.

Frequently asked Questions
When and where are we meeting?
Please plan to be at Malé (Velana International Airport, MLE) on Sunday, 22nd August 2027 at midday 12:00 PM (noon).
We highly recommend arriving a day earlier and staying overnight on Hulhumalé Island. In 2025 our Team stayed at h78 Veli Hotel, only 15 minutes from the airport.
Do I need a visa for the Maldives?
For most nationalities, no visa is required in advance to enter the Maldives. Travellers receive a free 30-day visa on arrival as long as they have a valid passport (with at least six months’ validity from the day of arrival), proof of onward travel, and accommodation details (Seascape).
We recommend filling out the online immigration form before you travel, ideally while you’re still at home. Some airlines may ask for proof that you’ve completed this step before allowing you to check in.
Please also double-check the latest entry requirements for your nationality before travelling, as regulations can change.
Do you offer Mermaid Certification?
The retreat itself doesn’t include any formal training or certification. However, you can complete your SSI Mermaid Course for an additional USD 175 during the trip.
Once you’ve earned your SSI Mermaid Certification, you can also upgrade to the SSI Ocean Mermaid Course for an additional USD 175.
If you’d like to do both certifications, the total cost is USD 325.
What kind of fitness level do I need to have?
We’ll be spending several hours in the water each day, which can be physically demanding. A good general fitness level is important to make the most of your experience and to ensure you can move comfortably and safely in the ocean.
We’ll always have surface support and buoyancy devices available for you to rest when needed, but overall, being in good shape will help you enjoy the retreat more fully and with ease.
Do you provide mermaid tails?
No, we don’t provide mermaid tails — you’ll need to bring your own. Please make sure your tail fits you well and that you feel comfortable and confident swimming in it before the retreat.
If your tail is new, please practice getting in and out of it safely before the retreat to make sure you’re fully prepared and confident in the water.
How can I transport my mermaid tail?
If you’re bringing a fabric tail, it will most likely fit into your regular suitcase.
For silicone tails with a large fluke, we recommend using the Mares Cruise Backpack. This spacious dive bag is perfect for transporting big tails safely and comfortably.
Please make sure to check your baggage weight allowance before your flight. You may need to add a sports equipment bag or purchase extra baggage allowance in advance — it’s usually much cheaper to arrange this before you arrive at the airport.

Can I also shoot in other outfits?
Yes, absolutely! Feel free to bring other shooting outfits, such as flowing dresses, skirts, or accessories that complement your mermaid look.
We’ll also bring a selection of designer dresses that participants can use, and we encourage everyone to share and lend outfits to one another — it’s a wonderful way to create even more variety and magic in your photos.
Do you cater to special diets?
Yes, absolutely. We’re happy to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other special dietary needs. A few weeks before the trip, we’ll send out a form asking about your dietary preferences and requirements to make sure everyone is well catered for during the retreat.
How are the cabins equipped?
All cabins accommodate two guests, either in a double-bed or twin-bed setup. Cabins are pre-assigned before arrival and allocated based on availability or your booking preference (such as lower or upper deck).
Each cabin is air-conditioned and includes a private bathroom with shower and toilet, offering you a comfortable space to unwind after your ocean adventures.
What about the bathrooms?
All bathrooms are equipped with a shower, sink, and toilet. Please take extra care not to slip and make sure to close the shower curtain and door when using the shower.
Please note that toilet paper must not be flushed down the toilets on board. This can block the system and harm the delicate reef ecosystems. Instead, please use the waste bins provided in all bathrooms — they are emptied regularly.
We provide ecological shampoo and shower gel, as well as towels, so there’s no need to bring your own.
Do I need to bring my own towels?
No, it’s not necessary to bring towels. Shower and beach towels are provided on board for your convenience.
Can I stay longer?
Yes, you can join us for the week from 29 August to 5 September 2027 for the Mermaid Retreat and explore the beautiful North Atolls. Beyond that, you’re welcome to book your own hotel or resort before or after the retreat, but we don’t offer any additional stays outside of our two retreat weeks.
Is it possible to have a cabin for myself?
The retreat price is based on two people sharing a cabin with someone of the same gender (or with your partner if they are joining you). Since we spend most of our time in the water, on uninhabited islands, or relaxing on deck, your cabin is mainly used for sleeping and showering. Some participants even enjoy sleeping on the sun deck under the stars.
If we end up with uneven booking numbers, a few participants may naturally receive their own cabin. If you would like to be considered for this, please let us know after your deposit is paid. However, this cannot be guaranteed. For example, during Mermaid Week Maldives 2025, a few participants did receive their own cabins due to group numbers.
If having a private cabin is very important to you, you may book a guaranteed single cabin for an additional USD 1,000 per week. If you would like to do this, please inform us after your deposit is paid.
What happens if I have to cancel my trip?
All retreat bookings become 100% non-refundable once the deposit has been paid and your spot is reserved.
However, your spot can be transferred to another participant:
• You may sell your spot to someone else directly, or
• We can offer your spot to someone on our waitlist (if available).
If your booking is successfully transferred, there will be a USD 250 admin and rebooking fee.
If we are the ones transferring your spot to someone from our waitlist, you will receive your payment back minus the USD 250 fee once the new participant has paid for the booking.
Please note that a refund is only possible after the spot has been successfully transferred.
Is there a fuel surcharge?
There might be a fuel surcharge, depending on current fuel prices in the Maldives.
As the Maldives imports over 90% of its goods, rising fuel costs and currency fluctuations can sometimes affect operating expenses. While we did not have to pay a fuel surcharge in 2025, please keep in mind that it may apply in the future.
If required, the surcharge would be USD 15 per person per night (USD 105 for 7 nights) and would be payable on board. The amount is reviewed and adjusted regularly based on actual fuel prices.
We appreciate your understanding, as this charge helps balance the increased operational costs without directly raising retreat prices.
Can you organise airfare?
No, we don’t organise flights. All participants are responsible for booking their own airfare to and from Malé (Velana International Airport, MLE). Once you arrive, we’ll take care of everything from the airport transfer onwards so you can relax and enjoy your mermaid adventure.
For when should I book my return flight?
You will be dropped off at Velana International Airport (MLE) on the morning of 29th August 2027 (or 5th September, if you book 2 weeks). We recommend booking your return flight for the early afternoon on the same day to allow enough time for transfers and check-in.
What kind of experience is required?
Participants must be strong and confident swimmers who feel comfortable in the ocean. You should have some experience in mermaiding and ideally in snorkelling as well.
It’s important that you can equalise your ears and hold your breath for at least one minute while staying calm and relaxed underwater.
Experience in freediving or scuba diving is not required but highly recommended, as these skills will help you make the most of this unique underwater experience and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the location even more.
How should I prepare for the retreat?
Mermaiding can be physically demanding and even risky without proper preparation, so we highly recommend practicing swimming in a mermaid tail regularly before joining the retreat. Please also practice equalising your ears, relaxation, and breath-hold control.
To support your preparation, Mermaid Kat has created the Underwater Modelling Workshop Online Course, which helps you train these important skills and get ready for your underwater photo and video shoots.
While it’s not required to complete a freediving or scuba diving course beforehand, we highly recommend it. These skills will help you feel more confident and allow you to enjoy the magic of the underwater world even more deeply.
Are photos with marine life guaranteed?
Although our locations are carefully selected for their vibrant marine life, encounters can never be guaranteed — we can’t exactly call the manta rays or send the whale sharks a WhatsApp to ask where they are! Over the past years, all our mermaids and mermen have enjoyed many incredible encounters, and most were able to take photos with graceful manta rays and gentle whale sharks.
During this trip, we’ll visit shallow-water sites where nurse sharks and stingrays are commonly found, and there’s also a high chance to meet manta rays and whale sharks. While the ocean follows her own rhythm, our team will always do their best to create magical opportunities for you to connect with these beautiful creatures.
Is there WI-FI on board?
No, there is no Wi-Fi available on board. We recommend getting a Maldivian SIM card at the airport or purchasing an eSIM online before your trip.
If you buy a SIM card at the airport, please check the data details carefully — some packages may look large but are limited to social media use only in the fine print. Make sure to choose a plan that includes full internet access so you can stay connected throughout the retreat if needed.
Will I receive trip details beforehand?
Yes! About two months before the retreat, we’ll create a WhatsApp group with all participants and team members. This is where we’ll share important trip details, answer any final questions, and give everyone the chance to meet and get to know each other before we set off on our ocean adventure.
Don’t worry — we want you to arrive fully relaxed and not stressed. The retreat experience begins long before you travel, and our goal is to make sure you feel supported and well-prepared every step of the way.
What kind of food can we expect?
Meals on board are served buffet-style, offering a variety of delicious dishes to suit every taste. Water, tea, and coffee are complimentary throughout the trip.
Soft drinks, fresh juices, and alcoholic beverages (including cocktails, wine, beer, and liquors) are available for an additional charge.
If you have special dietary requests — such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or any allergies — please let us know before arrival so we can make sure you’re well taken care of.
Can I bring a not-merperson friend?
Yes, your friend is most welcome to join! There are plenty of other activities on board — such as relaxing, reading, paddleboarding, swimming, snorkelling, or scuba diving (for certified divers).
For those who are not participating in the mermaid activities, please book the scuba package instead. This allows your friend to fully enjoy all the beauty and adventure the retreat has to offer while you dive into your mermaid experience.
What is the water temperature?
The average water temperature in the Maldives is around 29°C (84°F) — beautifully warm and perfect for spending long hours in the ocean.
For scuba diving, we recommend wearing a 3mm wetsuit for extra comfort during multiple dives.
For mermaiding and snorkelling, the water is pleasantly warm, so a wetsuit isn’t necessary unless you get cold easily.
Do you accept payment plans?
You’re excited to join this adventure but can’t pay the full deposit right now?
No problem! Simply get in touch with us, and we’ll arrange a payment plan that works for everyone.
Do I need insurance?
All scuba divers are required to have valid insurance that specifically covers diving accidents. Proof of this insurance must be presented to the dive guides during check-in. Please note that Eco Pro Divers assumes no liability for any incidents and does not cover costs such as hyperbaric chamber treatment or medical transport.
In addition, we strongly recommend obtaining comprehensive travel insurance and “cancel for any reason” insurance, as this trip is non-refundable.
What about alcohol?
Importing alcoholic beverages into the Maldives is prohibited by law. Any bottles containing alcohol will be confiscated by Customs upon arrival.
However, alcohol is available for purchase on board, including wine, beer, cocktails and spirits.
For safety reasons, diving, snorkelling, or mermaiding after consuming alcohol or while under the influence of a hangover is strictly not permitted, as it can seriously impair judgment and increase the risk of decompression sickness or other accidents.
If the guides determine that a guest is unfit to enter the water, they will kindly ask them to sit out the session. This policy is in place to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being during the retreat.
What kind of tip is required?
A service charge of USD 15 per guest, per night will be added to your final bill on board. This service charge acts as a gratuity and is equally shared among all crew members.
For a 7-night retreat, this totals USD 105 per guest.
During our Mermaid Retreats in 2025, we had 17 dedicated crew members working tirelessly to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety — their service truly made the experience exceptional.
If you wish, you’re also welcome to tip your photographers separately as a personal thank-you for their work.
How can I pay my bill onboard?
You can pay your onboard bill in cash using MVR, USD, or Euro, or conveniently by credit card through an online payment link.
Please note that credit card payments are subject to a 4% bank fee.
